Well, this is an illustrated story "How to build your own sauna". My house is made of aerated autoclaved concrete blocks. The outer wall got 10 cm mineral wool insulation. Inside the sauna walls were carefully plastered with water resistant cement plaster (cement + sand + water + silicates). It is better to use modern organic water resistant chemicals (like Krystol), but plastered walls in my sauna will not be in direct contact with water or mechanical damaging agents to remove the waterproofing Calcium Silicate Hydrates from the Sauna walls.

I am going to place a Russian made metal wood burning Vulkan sauna stove ($300.00) in the sauna. Wood burning stove has more heat output comparing to electric stoves. Also it is a "green stove" without any electromagnetic fields, generated by electric sauna stoves. That sauna heater is equipped with the water boiling system. Furthermore in XXI century Russia the house electricity supply can be turned off at any time - due to any accident or by the will of drunk electric supply company personnel. So it is better to be "fuel independent", especially if you are relaxing in your sauna.
The most popular sauna sizes are 150 x 210 cm and 180 x 210 cm. This size allows one sauna user to lay flat on a bench or four adults to sit in reasonable comfort. The ceiling height for a sauna can be from 200 cm to a maximum 210 cm high. A sauna height of 210 cm for the ceiling will permit the best heat level in the entire sauna. Because heat rises sauna ceiling height of 220 cm and more will defeat the temperature comfort inside. And don't forget to check the minimum sauna height in the sauna heater manual. See sauna benches dimensions chart for more details.

It took 6 weekends for me to build the sauna within the ACC block walls.

The sauna benches mount height will determine what kind of heat each suana user will experience. The heat in the traditional Finnish sauna is very soft, difuse, eminating from all sources including the walls, ceiling, stove, and especially the air itself. The best sauna designs offer two levels of seating. The upper sauna bench is hotter than the lower bench. An upper bench, about 90 cm high, and a lower bench, about 45 cm high. While planning benches size figure that you’ll need at least 60 cm of bench space for each sauna user.

Russian log houses

Real Russian architecture is not a cityline of uninspiring, grey concrete apartment buildings, built by Soviets for Soviet people. Real Russia is different. At least - it was different. It is still possible to find some old log houses built in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries in any part of Russia. Unfortunatly most of old log houses are abandoned or not properly cared. So these traditional wooden houses are disappearing from the Russian landscape.

Old log houses and log huts or cabins (in Russian - 'Izba') play an important role in Russian architecture and design. Russian log hut or cabin means simple one- or 1½-story structure. There were little change in a simple rectangular floor plan design and design of steep, chalet-style roofs since the Viking time in Russia. Walls are built by placing logs one onto another with interlockes (joints) at corners. There are about 50 traditional Russian types of log house corner joints. Traditionally logs are cut in late fall or at the winter beginning. Than left on ground with ventilation space stickers till late spring to let frost reduce wood moisture content. Russian preferred to build the log house from chopped rough-hewn logs of pine, spruce and larch. Russians never used old trees, dead trees, trees from crossroads and from teh abandoned roads for log house construction. These trees "had got bad energy" and can harm home and people. Most of woodworks were done with axe only with little or no stone, metal, or glass.

Russian log house means somewhat more finished, more architecturally sophisticated than a simple log cabin. Log house walls are carefully handcrafted or mashine milled, painted or covered with wooden siding planks. Russian log cabin is a a smaller, more rustic log house.

The Russian sacred springs and holy wells were frequently pagan sacred sites that later became Christianized with Orthodox church. The adaptation of the pagan water cult had created Russian Orthodox ritualistic and mystical experience. The sacred springs and holy wells were newly said to have been made to flow by the action of a local saint. The healing and wonder-making water qualities were attributed to the presence of Holy spirit or Christian saint.

Due to the Christian adoption the sacred springs and holy wells cult successfully survived in Russia. Those sacred placed suffered only during the Soviet time in XX century. Guided by the aggressive communist ideology Soviets started to demolished sacred places of Russia: thousands of churches and chapels were demolished, and the priests were arrested or killed. At the beginning of 1960-th Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev made a decision to remove the last survived sacred miracles of Russia. Communists, police and KGB destroyed last well houses and chapels, put oil, dust and stones into the sacred springs and holy wells. A lot of sacred places piligrims were arrested.

The new sacred springs pilgrimage reborn took place after the U.S.S.R. has been collapsed in 1991. The freedom of faith was officially announced in Russian constitution. The old sacred springs and holy wells has been cleaned up and reconstructed by local Christian communities with the Russian Orthodox church support.

Nowadays thousands of pilgrims visit the sacred springs and holy wells in Russia. Most of them are looking for the spiritual magic healing and curing of various illnesses. Each sacred water body has a history of certain kind of illnesses healings, attested by local priests. Some holy wells are famous for curing eye problems, the other are helpful with fertility problems. There are sacred springs to solve life problems, to find a good spouse. The other are helpful to cope alcohol and drug addiction.
